How Long Do Solar Panels Last? 30+ Years of Clean Energy

A quality solar panel is built to last 25 years or more. Most tier-1 panels come with a product warranty of 25 years and a performance warranty that guarantees the panel will still produce at least 80% to 85% of its rated output after 25 years.

What is the difference between product and performance warranties?

The product warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. If the panel fails mechanically, the product warranty applies. The performance warranty guarantees the panel does not lose too much output over time. Both are important when comparing brands.

What causes panels to degrade?

Degradation is mainly caused by UV exposure, heat cycles, moisture and electrical stress. Quality panels lose around 0.4% to 0.6% of their output per year. Cheaper panels can degrade faster, which is why we stick to tier-1 brands with proven track records.

What about inverters and batteries?

Inverters typically last 10 to 15 years and have warranties of 5 to 10 years. Batteries usually last 10 to 15 years and have warranties of 10 years. These are shorter-lived than panels, but they are easy to replace or upgrade when the time comes.
