Water filtration
Filtration is a series of stages, each removing something different. Water passes first through a sediment barrier, then through activated carbon that adsorbs chlorine, taste and organic compounds, and optionally through fine membranes or UV that deal with dissolved solids and microorganisms. What comes out the tap is the same water, minus what you don't want in it.
A pleated or spun cartridge traps rust, silt, sand and pipe scale down to around 5 microns, protecting the finer stages behind it.
Activated carbon adsorbs chlorine, chloramine, pesticides and the compounds behind off tastes and smells, typically down to 0.5 micron.
Where dissolved solids, fluoride or heavy metals are a concern, an RO membrane removes them and a remineralising cartridge restores balance.
An optional UV lamp sterilises bacteria and cysts on tank or bore water, then filtered water is delivered to a dedicated tap, the whole house, or a boiling and chilled unit.
The housings, manifolds and taps are built to last well over a decade — it's only the cartridges that are consumable. Change them on schedule and a good system quietly delivers filtered water for 10 to 15 years, at a fraction of the cost of bottled water.
