How EV charging works

An EV charger is a controlled power supply that converts your home or business AC supply into the DC current your car's battery needs. Smart chargers talk to your solar inverter, your energy tariff and your car to charge when power is cheapest or greenest — often straight from your roof.

1. Power flows from the wall

The charger takes 230V AC from your switchboard and converts it to the correct DC voltage and current profile for your vehicle's battery.

2. It talks to the car

A control pilot signal negotiates the safe maximum charge rate with the car, ramps up smoothly and stops automatically when full.

3. Solar-aware modes kick in

Eco modes monitor your solar export and only send spare power to the car. Fast mode charges at full speed when you need range quickly.

4. Load management protects the board

The charger scales back if the house or site is drawing heavily, so your main breaker is never overloaded.

Built to last

A quality EV charger is a solid-state device with no moving parts, so the electronics typically last 10 years or more. The cable and plug are the only wear items, and most can be replaced separately without swapping the whole unit.
