Heat pump

Heat pump hot water, powered by your roof

Hot water is one of the biggest loads in an Australian home. A heat pump uses a fraction of the energy of electric resistance, and timed to the middle of the day it runs largely on your own solar.

Heat pump

How heat pump hot water works

A heat pump hot water system is a fridge running in reverse. Instead of using an element to make heat, it uses a small compressor and fan to harvest warmth from the surrounding air and move it into the tank — using roughly a quarter to a fifth of the electricity of a traditional electric storage system.

1. The fan draws in air

Ambient air passes over an evaporator where refrigerant boils at low temperature, absorbing heat from the air.

2. The compressor concentrates it

Compressing the refrigerant raises its temperature well above the water temperature in the tank.

3. Heat transfers to the water

A heat exchanger wrapped around or inside the tank passes that heat into the stored water, typically at 60°C or higher.

4. Timed to your solar

We set the unit to heat in the middle of the day so it soaks up surplus solar instead of buying power overnight.

Built to last

Heat pump hot water units generally last 15 years or more, with tanks — particularly stainless steel models — often outliving the compressor, which can be replaced on its own rather than swapping the whole system.

Victorian Energy Upgrades

Victorian Energy Upgrades rebates on heat pump hot water

Swapping an existing electric-resistive or gas storage hot water system for a high-efficiency heat pump is one of the largest discounts available under the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program. We handle the eligibility check, the scheme paperwork and the decommissioning of your old unit.

  • Substantial up-front discount on eligible heat pump replacements
  • Available for owner-occupiers, rentals and small business premises
  • Combine with solar to cut running costs to near zero
  • Old gas or electric system removed and reported under the scheme

Rebate and discount amounts vary with product, capacity, location and the system being replaced, and program rules change over time. Eligibility is confirmed in writing before installation.
