Heating & cooling

How reverse-cycle air conditioning works

A reverse-cycle system doesn't create heat or cold — it moves it. A refrigerant loop absorbs heat on one side of the wall and releases it on the other, and an inverter compressor varies its speed to match the room instead of switching hard on and off. That is why it can deliver several kilowatts of heating for every kilowatt of electricity used.

1. Refrigerant absorbs heat

In cooling mode the indoor coil absorbs heat from the room air; in heating mode the outdoor coil pulls heat out of the outside air, even at low temperatures.

2. The compressor raises it

An inverter-driven compressor lifts the refrigerant to a higher temperature and pressure, ramping up or down rather than cycling.

3. Heat is released

The other coil dumps that heat where you want it — outside in summer, into the room in winter.

4. It runs on your solar

Cooling load peaks in the middle of the day, which is exactly when your roof is producing most — so daytime running can be close to free.

Built to last

A properly sized and serviced reverse-cycle system typically runs 15–20 years. Keeping filters clean and having the coils checked every couple of years is most of what protects both efficiency and lifespan.

Victorian Energy Upgrades

Victorian Energy Upgrades rebates on air conditioning

Replacing an old ducted gas heater, wall furnace or inefficient split system with a high-efficiency reverse-cycle air conditioner can attract a Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) discount. The rebate is delivered as an up-front discount on your installation, calculated from the star rating, capacity and climate zone of the system you choose. You do not need to own the house — tenants and landlords can also access VEU upgrades with the right agreement.

  • Discount applied up front — no paperwork or waiting for a cheque
  • Available for eligible residential and small business upgrades
  • Higher discounts when replacing ducted or non-ducted gas heating
  • Old equipment decommissioned and reported as required by the scheme

Rebate and discount amounts vary with product, capacity, location and the system being replaced, and program rules change over time. Eligibility is confirmed in writing before installation.
